Silicone, Water or Oil based LubricantsFirst things first, whether you’re indulging in solo or couples play & using toys or just the tools you were born with, lube can add that extra level of pleasure. Whether you are looking for a little help getting going; are fed up of pausing half way through a fantastic session because everything starts to get a little abrasive; or simply enjoy the improved sensation you get when everything is moving that little bit easier, once you’ve put lube in your bedside table or overnight bag you’ll never want to be without it.
The second key thing to remember is each type of lube, e.g. silicone, water or oil based, have very their own pros and cons. This may sound obvious but many people treat them like brands, looking only at the sensation they produce rather than the effect they can have. It can be a costly mistake.Water basedThe all rounder of the group, waterbased lubes are safe to use with condoms and all toys. They don’t stain your sheets and won’t interfere with your barrier contraception. Perfect for couples and solo play although you may find them a little thin for anal penetration.
Oil BasedOil based lubes offer a smoother, longer lasting experience and this extra richness has often seen them recommnended for anal play. Unfortunately added richness comes at a cost, oil based lubes destroy latex on contact so are absolutely no use with condoms, most barrier contraceptions and some toys. The can also promote yeast infections and cause vaginal irritation so most are now marketed as male masturbation lubes where to be fair they do a great job!
Silicone basedThe best of both worlds. Silicone lubes offer the all the benefits of oil based lubes without any of the corrosive or irritating side effects. They are a little more expensive but a tiny amount goes a long way and they’re also waterproof so perfect for those of you who want to get busy in the shower, bath or pool. Latex compatible and totally safe for internal use, silicone lube is worth every penny. We only have one word of caution, Silicone Lube and Silicone Toys do not mix, the lube will damage your toy and eventually render it useless.
Flavoured lubesSome people prefer flavoured lubes and if you need us to tell you why then you’re probably on the wrong site! The majority of flavoured lubes (and all that we sell on this site) are water based.
Questions:
Can’t I just use Vaseline?
Vaseline (along with many other items around the house that may seem like a good idea) is oil based so all the problems we listed above come in to play. Sexual Lubricants have been developed for the job and work brilliantly so why risk anything else.
We are trying to get pregnant, will any of the lubes effect my chance?
Steer clear of oil based lubes and store cupboard substitutes but there is no reason why the majority of lubes will have any effect as they are no way spermicidal.
As with everything else we do here at Lola’s, lube is designed to add another dimension to your sex life so experiment, enjoy and be happy.
